STRAWBERRIES BOOST RED BLOOD CELLS, STUDY SHOWS

Posted on June 23, 2011 by

Eating a lot of strawberries each day significantly improves and increases the red blood cells in your blood, improving the antioxidant capacity of the blood plasma and also the resistence of red blood cells to oxidative haemolysis (fragmentation). Scientists are now advancing on this study to try to determine how many strawberries per day will yield the best results and also to isolate those factors within the fruit which is benefitting and strengthening the blood. In addition, the variety of strawberry you eat may make a difference. For example, some kinds of strawberries make eruthrocytes more resistant to oxidative stress. In the study, published in FOOD CHEMISTRY, 2011; 128(1):180 DOI: 10.1016/j.foodchem.2011.03.025, 12 healthy volunteers ate 500 grams of stawberries (Sveva variety) over the course of a full day. Researchers then took blood samples from them after four, eight, 12 and 16 days and then a month later. The results showed that regular consumption of this fruit improves the blood plasma significantly.

Interesting article and good news for us fruit/protein smoothie lovers. They also pack more Vit C per gram than most other fruits. Looks like the science is saying that a whole lot of a certain type of strawberry has to be consumed daily to get the blood benefits. We’ll probably see this turn up in a pill form soon, but I’ll continue with the real thing (assuming I’m eating the right variety).
