Soon, individuals will have mobile applications for their I-Phone or I-Pad which will give them genetic information they can use to stay healthy, fight disease and prevent disease. One application will hold your genome information right in your cell phone for access by your physician. This is expected to help physicians to provide more customized medicine to their patients. For example, “what should you know about your statin’s effectiveness nased on your genome? In addition, new applications are being developed to access electronic medical records on demand for individuals. Also, you will be able to quickly screen your pharmacy records to know what medications you have been getting including the dosage and whether this is consistent with your genomic markers. This is important for Plavix, for example which has been found to be effective for individuals with certain genetic markers. These applications will be coming out soon and the field is expected to blossom as the potential for disease prevention and increasing individual health is considered high. Here is one area relating to health and mobile applications that doesn’t get much press but which I think will be a significant issue in enhancing the health of the world populace; presently, when there is a significant development in medical therapeutics, it receives announcement after the studies have been published and the benefits sift into the population fairly slowly and more slowly for the poorest on the planet. However, the substantial increase in use of mobile apps, including an increase in the poorer sections of the planet should mean that information flow on disease therapeutics should reach decision makers more quickly. In addition, once important information is more accessible to being undestood by users of mobile apps, they should be able to make demand for these treatments from their physicians. So there is a major space for companies that monitor and report on the latest changes in medicine and pharmaceuticals. In addition, for individuals with chronic disease who wish to find out about clinical trials and therapeutics to stave off death, these applications should make a big difference.
