2030 Cardiovascular disease & death rates will surge in China

Cardiovascular disease and death rates will surge in China by up to 73 percent by 2030 due to aging, smoking, high blood pressure and other risk factors according to research reported in CIRCULATION:CARDIOVASCULAR QUALITY AND OUTCOMES, an American Heart Association Journal. According to researchers, aging, dietary changes and less physical activity are leading to more heart disease and stroke, says lead author Andrew Moran, M.D., M.P.H. Assitant Professor at Columbia University Medical Center N.Y.. The study used a computer model to forecast future cardiovascular disease in Chinese adults ages 35-84. 62% of Chinese men smoke and 49 % of nonsmokers mostly women are exposed to passive smoke. Yearly, researchers predict cardiovascular disease will increase by more than 50% and diabetes may result in an additional 23% in cardiac events. The study co-author was Dongfeng Gu, M.D., M.Sc VP of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing.Journal Reference:
