FUTURE OCEAN FLOATING CITIES

Posted on August 16, 2009 by

lilypad_2Floating cities on the ocean have received increased attention due to concerns about global warming and rising seas. A number of groups are  designing and planning floating or undersea cities of the future. One floating city is already operatonal, a super cruise ship in Florida operated by Residensea, for the wealthy who want a sea based permanent home. Another organization SeaSteading.org (from the term homesteading) has been receiving grants and raising funds to research  long term issues regarding sea-based floating cities. It has a book in progress, which overviews the pros and cons of floating cities versus underwater cities. Belgian Architect Vincent Callebaut has conceived of a lillypad designed city including water collection and purification and which operated on solar and wind energies. In Tokyo, to deal with a lack of developable land, a “city in a pyramid” has been planned to float on Tokyo Bay. This plan is moving from design to implementation stage, an indication that the development of floating cities may not be so distant.

Its hard to see whether this is a growing trend yet, but it seems possible. Technologies are emerging for maintaining floating cities at sea. They may offer tax avoidance advantages (although residents presumably pay for the ship’s running, maintenance and some corporate profit, and it won’t be long before international tax laws close the loophole). You may also know that over the years the attractions of flexibility and security mean jails have been established on floating barges. Finally, there are “floating cities” of houseboats in many littoral regions of the world.

It could certainly happen in the next decade, given enough investment–and obviously, as the sea begins rising dramatically, then there’s going to be an urgent need for many more people to find a floating refuge.

The other alternative, obviously, is houseboat-cities being established, with millions of people strung out along the coasts of the flooding continents over the next 1-200 hundred years and further on into the future.

It is imperative that we develop these cities as soon as possible because we ae at the planets tipping point already and anyone who is in denial about this please stand aside because comments like it not making financial sense are trite when no less than survival of the specis is at stake here.
