Not an addict-yet, a lover. For those who have seen SHUTTER ISLAND the world inside my head is like that inside the head of Leonardo DiCaprio. Worth seeing. I dream of games which will, by their sheer brilliance and capacity to understand societal dilemmas, lift us from our downward spiral. Instead, we get more shooter games. Bioshock creators have the ability to do more–their concepts are so unique and interesting. An underwater city where brilliant scientific minds are allowed to flourish. An advanced utopian creation gone awry. So we must shoot and kill. Here’s what I think. The video game population will unite and demand more…something greater than a blast em sock em immersion, because there is more for them–something far deeper and a capacity to unify the 100 million users world wide towards greater goals. A great convergence of brain power as the world as never seen. Players of Bioshock unite. take back the night. VIDEO GAME DEVELOPERS–CONSIDER THE AWSOME POTENTIAL YOU HAVE AND THE HUMAN RESOURCES TO MAKE REAL CHANGE IN THE WORLD. LOOK AHEAD. HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE BEFORE YOUR SHOOTER FORMATS ARE REJECTED?

He saw a news story about George Sodini, who murdered three and wounded nine others in a Pennsylvania gym before killing himself. Sodini had talked about his plans on his blog, as have many others. Now, there are social media monitoring tools such as Radian6 which can read and listen to conversations on the web, including the blogosphere via an heuristic analysis engine. It is used sometimes to protect brands from disparagement and to guage sentiment on products. The questions raised is whether it could be modified to watch for potential homicidal or suicidal acts? Outstanding lateral thinking Jonathan! Present uses of social media are rudimentary and limited.

Here is what I have come up with for social media predictions (probable trends) for 2010; 1) New kinds of searching on the internet will evolve. Instead of going to sites like Google, users will receive customized search results in the context of what they are currently doing (similar to Amazon only more broadly applied). So, if you are researching travel plans, you will be sent links and summaries rirectly related to the topic. If you are researching an illness, you will be sent articles and summaries of studies closely on point, automatically; 2) Social media interaction on mobile devices will skyrocket, especially as tablets come on the market next year; 3) Augmented reality will continue to emerge in the form of applications on mobile phones and tablets which superimpose computer-generated info like instructions or labels or pricing over real world data; 4) Facebook will continue to grow in popularity and will come into greater use as a business networking device like Linkedin, only with more flexibility and less rigidity. In addition, Facebook will become a repository of directory information to find stuff; 5) Twitter will also continue to expand, as will the development of more uses for it including the immediate distribution of critical news and information to users on a highly customized format. Twitter will evolve quickly from its present use as a fun tool to an essential one.

A 2007 article in Good Magazine summarized the work of Bruce Bueno de Mesquita who claims to predict mathematically, “virtually any international conflict, provided the basic inputs are accurate.” Bueno de Mesquita can also be seen on You Tube giving lectures. His work, which some dismiss too readily, raises important issues concerning the use of statistics and game theory to reliably envision the probable outcome of major world events. Who is this guy? He’s an NYU Professor of Political Science who has also studied statistics and has created a model simulation program. In the program, he takes a particular world flashpoint and plots out the probable way things will unfold based on what is known of the nation-state leaders and their actions assuming they work from a point of self interest. He acknowledges the existence of Black Swans, the events we can never anticipate but says their existence does not do away with his ability to determine a probable scenario and outcome. Allan Stam, Professor of Political Science at Penn State, examined the validity of Bueno de Mesquita’s work in the October 2000 British Journal of Political Science. He supported Bueno de Mesquita’s work, within certain limitations. A year before, Stephen Walt on the faculty at Harvard, attacked the assumptions of Bueno de Mesquita’s approach using “rational choice” models. (players promoting their own interests which Walt says is not always the case, especially when emotions or mental illness come to play). Bueno de Mesquita is asserting that consistent and repeatable findings that can reliably determine the outcome of major international conflicts. What has yet to be considered is what happens when other people use the same model? Can they achieve the same results consistently, using the same model and methods? Given that Bueno De Mesquita is claiming to use the scientific model, this, measure is the essential measure of his work. Looking more broadly, human behavior is obviously difficult to predict. However, decisions made by world leaders in crises do seem to have their own internal logic and statistical modeling is advancing swiftly in sophistication. Here where I think all of this fits. If Bueno de Mesquita and his model could reliably predict the outcome of international crisis points, he would be one of the wealthiest and most influential persons on the planet, which he isn’t. However, we now have an enhanced and growing ability to amass volumes of information quickly and to access meaningful data previously kept secret. This, combined with an increasing knowledge about the dynamics of world affairs and the internal workings of nations may allow us to reach a point where these kinds of model simulations will set a reliable base point for projecting of world trends. (As an aside, I think Bueno de Mesquita would make a great character for a dystopian sci fi novel placing him into the time when such models work and showing what horror it would wreak on his life and the lives of those around him. Sometimes, it doesn’t pay to know too much). What do you think?

I haven’t tried it yet but I would sure like to! Slowly but steadily, progress is being made in the creation of more realistic virtual reality environments and that is combining with the richness and realism of graphics born of the video game explosion. This is just a tiny glimpse of many new developments that will enhance the our experience and ultimately create the feeling that they are entirely inside the environment. This will alter the experience in ways unanticipated and lead, I think, to the conception of more realistic virtual worlds like Sim City but where the avatars are life-size and physically interactive with other players. These developmens should also enhance the film going experience, if they are embraced by Hollywood which has been reluctant to change in the past. However, I do not see a melding of movies and video games in the near future. Please send me info on other augmented reality technology that is on the horizon.

Last month, Adam Wilson posted a message “Go Badgers” on Twitter and became the first person to post an electronic message just by thinking it, when aided by a scanning device developed at the University of Wisconsin. With a little practice, Wilson learned to pick out letters from the alphabet. The capacity of the new scanner to detect the electrical fields generated by currents from brain cells is considered a major breakthrough and is now being put to commercial use. Gemma Calvert, professor of applied neurology at Warwick University and founder of Neurosense has many customers including Unilever, Procter & Gamble, McDonalds and GMTV. Research says that most of our purchasing decisions are subconscious, but brain scans can reveal those processes and help corporations market their products. Some people feel this is “brainjacking”, however, the research has significant potential benefits. For example studies indicate that when cigarette packaging with health warnings are shown, the result may be counter-productive. The brain scans show that when smokers re shown the warning labels it activates the ventral striatum and nucleus accumbens implying that the labels are actually triggering a craving for cigarettes. Scientists also believe that brain scanning will help with metal illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia.

We may be on the verge of a significant technological breakthrough, likely to change our lives in many areas. Virtual and augmented reality and the use of videoconferencing is expected to alter daily business functions; enhance scientific and medical advances and create a new genre of video games and films. Virtual and “augmented” reality simulations have recently undergone major advances and the technology now exists to allow us to inexpensively enter computer enhanced worlds which so mimic reality differences are not discernable. One new product, Nintendo’s Wii has recently been shown to help treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including depression, according to Ben Herz, Program Director in the School of Allied Health Sciences at The Medical College of Georgia. Wii allows patients to move in simulated reality in a safe environment. Apparently the game increases production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter deficient in Parkinsons patients. Nintendo is also working on a holographic video system which will project full spectrum 3d images for videogames. This will mean that players will “step into” the action with already rich visuals and sound effects. A company in Seattle has created a new virtual reality device that lets players move around inside a hollow ball while visualizing a virtual reality world. The company VirtuSphere, says that the new device may be used for training fire fighters and combat troops and will also be developed for realistic videogame experiences. The sphere is an 8.5 foot hollow ball. The user steps into the ball wearing a wireless head mounted vitual display and can walk jump, roll or crawl in any direction. Iowa State University has created what it says is the most realistic virtual realit room in the world. This is a 10-foot by 10-foot virtual reality room which surrounds users with computer generated 3D images. It is being used to study, among other things, cell biology (aka Fantastic Voyage). One thing is certain, the time is not far off when businesses use vitual reality to save money on travel and to enhance communications. The first significant uses are expected in video games where players will step into a new reality of adventure and realism and instead of using an xbox or mouse, they will act physically in this world. Studies indicate that pilots trained on flight simulators–a form of virtual reality are more proficient than those trained in real planes. Surgeons are now receiving training on model simulators allowing them to gain significant time in the operating room without risk to actual patients. The technologies used in both of these fields are now being developed for use in realistic video games and Hollywood films.

Since almost all of June has been rainy, I decided to begin reading more novels to remind me that we are in summer. I am almost finished with ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card, a fascinating account of a boy drafted into the earth’s future military force to lead a final war against alien invaders. His training involves extensive work in a model battle simulator and the author, who had the work published in 1977, described developing technologies which include machine learning and predictive analytics. These devices are used, for example, to anticipate which teams of young warriors are most likely to win in mock battles waged against each other (and the anaytics are highly accurate). Without giving up too much more there is also a mobile “learning tablet” with built in video games which are cognitively designed for each student–the reference to our growing industry of “serious games.”

Most all of the present day marketing studies are now saying tht mobile phones and other devices will replace our pc’s and laptops for getting on-line. This makes sense, although it is hard for me to envision a world without my laptop. We carry around our laptops as though they are appendages of our body, despite the fact that most of us are storing our information on-line where it is accessible from any computer and using e-mail and our social networks, also accessible from any computer. So it makes a lot of sense that we will soon be free of this box, at least the one in its present size and shape. There will probably be a phase down, where the laptops gradually shrink in size, as we are already seeing and eventually become part of our environment and clothing and eventually connected to us so we are always able to connect on line. Amazingly, this is not so far away. The technology for computers is getting smaller more quickly than Moore’s Law would tell us it might. In some ways, there has been a sort of lethargy to integrate the computer into our environment — perhaps a consumer resistance to it.

I am, for example, somewhat surprized that we do not already have flexible computer screens to replace our newspapers. This has been in development for a while and the time is ripe for their acceptance. In existing technolgies, the screen is able to change the print upon command from a computer controlling the nano-particles inside. In addition, it amazes me that videoconferencing has been so slow to integrate into our lives. I would be shocked if we didn’t have a videconferencing screen in every car, plane and mobile device within five years. It is a must now for medical care.

I am of the belief that advances in the speed, capabilities and evolution of computer systems and analytics are a critical component to the development of technologies to help us deal with the daunting issues now at hand. Sustainable non-fossil fuel energies and conservation of energies are surmountable issues but problems requiring the attention and focus of a greater number of our thinkers. Communication, information exchange, simulation modeling and machine learning will be critical parts of this process and without the computer and the internet probably would not occur quickly enough.

If I am accurate in my assessment of the need for more integrated, more creative uses of computer technologies then we ought not leave this evolutionary process for conceptualization by science fiction writers. Instead, the process requires a kind of stewardship–which will enable and enhance these changes but not stifle them through over-control. Rather than setting out my auggestions for how this can occur, now, I invite your comments on this topic.

A swifter integration of computer technologies into our environments will mean a swifter evolution in how we view its use. We are limited now only by our imaginations and need to find more creative ways of solving our global dilemmas by advancing this evolution.

Good authors of science fiction read alot about science and then use their minds to extrapolate on what could be. Scientific and technical advances are usually generated through evolutionary stages based on new technological breakthroughs which aren’t conceived as part of an overall scheme but rather individual entries in the chapters of a technological book. Perhaps there is a better way to enhance the timing and scope of change.

In the mean time, I recommend Ender’s Game and I am on a rabid hunt for another novel which might open my mind to new possibilities. I open the floor to recommendations.
